Q: What is CrossFit?
A: CrossFit is by definition: constantly varied, high-intensity, functional movements. CrossFit is a core strength and conditioning program whose aim has been to forge broad, general, and inclusive fitness. The program is designed to prepare you for any physical task, not only those which are known but those which are unknown or even unknowable. CrossFit is literally the “sport of fitness”, specializing in not specializing.
Q: Is CrossFit for me?
A: Yes! CrossFit is for everyone. CrossFit is designed to be universally scalable, meaning that it can be applied to any committed individual regardless of experience. The needs of an Olympic athlete and our grandparents only differ by degree not kind. So we scale load (weight) and intensity, not programs.
Q: How is a typical CrossFit class run?
A: At Division St. CrossFit, we offer group-based classes throughout the day. There is one WOD (“workout of the day”) per day, which every class performs. Classes generally begin with a warm-up to prepare you for that day’s workout followed by a combination of strength work or skill practice and a conditioning workout. I wish I could be more specific but every day is different!
Q: What kind of movements might we be performing on a given day?
A: CrossFit aims to build physical competence in each of the ten recognized fitness domains: Cardiovascular and Respiratory Endurance, Stamina, Strength, Flexibility, Power, Speed, Coordination, Agility, Balance, and Accuracy. So you can expect to see a combination of running, rowing, gymnastics (body-weight exercises like pull-ups, squats, lunges, jumping, push-ups, etc.), Olympic weightlifting (clean and jerk, snatch), powerlifting (deadlift, squat, bench press), medicine ball work, kettlebells, and other skills on any given day.
Q: How do I get started?
A: At Division St. CrossFit we require you to go through an On-Ramp program, an introduction course to many of the CrossFit movements identified above in order to uphold the three most important and interdependent facets of any fitness program: safety, efficacy, and efficiency. Q: How do I know if CrossFit is going to work for me?
A: If we didn’t believe so strongly in CrossFit principles we wouldn’t be here! The On-Ramp course is designed to be a minimal investment for you to see true progress. Anyone can try anything for two weeks! In addition to allowing enough time to FEEL and LOOK better, you will see how much better you PERFORM.
Q: What do I need for class?
A: Readiness and willingness to work! Please wear comfortable gym clothes which will allow for freedom of movement and which you don’t mind getting sweaty. Minimalist shoes such as inov-8 BARE-XFs or F-LITEs, Vibrams, Nike Frees, Reebok CrossFit Nanos, or, our personal favorites, Chucks/Converse All-Stars are best but any close-toed gym shoes are a must. Feel free to bring a towel too!
